Twelve-Point Plan for
Substance Abuse Prevention and Health Enhancement
Syracuse University's Twelve-Point
Plan utilizes a comprehensive, environmental management approach
to reduce student substance abuse;
increase campus safety; and promote a campus culture characterized
by civility, good citizenship, and community engagement. In June,
2000, Syracuse University’s Twelve-Point Plan received national
recognition by being named a “Model Program” by the
U.S. Department of Education under the Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention
Models on College Campuses Program. This recognition included a
one-year grant to support and enhance the substance abuse prevention
program at Syracuse University and to disseminate the program to
other institutions of higher education via presentations, publications,
and web-based delivery strategies.
The Twelve-Point Plan web site
has been designed as a resource for other institutions of higher
education as they design alcohol
and other drug prevention plans to meet the needs of their local
communities. Some of the resources include alcohol and other
drug prevention curricula; data collection methods and findings;
lessons
learned from implemented strategies, including quarterly reports
of the University Judicial System documenting case activity,
data trends, and current research; and, developing community-based
initiatives.
The Twelve-Point Plan for Substance Abuse Prevention and Health
Enhancement incorporates the following recommended elements*:
- Campus
Leadership
- Awareness and Information
- Environmental and Targeted Approaches
