Presentations in Class
Working together, faculty, teaching assistants and the Center
for Career Services can ensure that Syracuse University students
explore and gain exposure to as many career opportunities as possible
in a fair and efficient manner, and that they are prepared to
present themselves effectively as candidates for important positions.
Center career consultants are ready to visit or host classes,
or even to fill in, if faculty need to be away, to present programs
on topics such as career decision making, employment trends and
issues, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, networking,
and other career and job search-related concerns.
For faculty and staff who advise student organizations,
we would welcome the opportunity to present similar information
to these groups.
Services Include:
Guest Teaching
Professional staff are available all year to present various workshops to classrooms. Presentations can be tailored to your individual class, from first year students to athletes. These interactive sessions help students not only become acquainted with other campus services, but also with themselves and what path they will ultimately select.
Examples of sessions include:
- Skills and Abilities Assessments: What do I like to do?
- Introduction to Resumes: Easier than you thought!
- Internships: Do I really need one? (and if I do how do I find one?)
- Interviewing and Networking: It's who AND what you know!
- Leadership vs. Management
- How to Succeed at Career Fair
- OrangeLink (formerly eRecruiting)
We are also open to other areas you feel would benefit your class, such as job searching or negotiation skills. Just ask!
Group Resume Critiques
To further expand the marketability of your students, we can help them prepare a resume early in their academic career. Staff is available to come into one or two class sessions to individually critique student resumes or students can come to the Center for Career Services in groups for a group critique. Either option offers guidelines for the class to enable the interaction to go as smoothly as possible .
Mock Interviews
Staff is available to conduct mock interviews with students on an individual basis. Students hone skills, overcome barriers to effective presentation and improve confidence. There are two options:
- videotaped to allow for student feedback and professor grading,
- non-taped to allow for counselor and/or professors to critique and rate the student based on experiences with employers and trends.
In preparation for such programming, we
want to encourage faculty to:
1) Tour the Center and meet the staff.
2) Familiarize yourself with the Center's career resource area
where printed and videotaped information on careers, companies,
job search techniques, and graduate study may be found.
3) Stay abreast of special career-related events, recruiting activities,
market trends and more by periodically reviewing the Calendar
of Events of this site.
4) Subscribe to The Connection, our monthly newsletter
of event, employer, and trend information. Email Chuck Reutlinger to receive this publication.
5) Offer feedback or ask questions to help us improve our web
site.
Presentations can be arranged by calling the
Center at 443-3616 or by emailing
Chuck Reutlinger, Associate Director for Information Resources and Services.
