Your Role in Student Hiring
Students certainly look to faculty for information and connections
in many career fields. Employers frequently form relationships
with faculty that result in requests for assistance in identifying
qualified potential employees. Faculty have historically served
important roles as references.
However, a faculty member who frequently refers
students for employment may be at risk if a failure to comply
with Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action regulations can
be proven. The Center subscribes to the Principles
of Professional Conduct, established by the National
Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE),
to guide career services professionals, employer representatives,
and third-party recruiters. NACE also provides A
Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring.
The Center would be happy to answer faculty questions regarding
these guidelines.
We would naturally appreciate the chance
to work with faculty to bring employers to our campus, or to ease
their consideration of our students in other ways as well. Faculty
should check the sections of this site that are aimed at employers,
both to understand the scope of our activities and to identify
our staff members involved with employer assistance.
