Requesting a Workshop
The Center welcomes requests from faculty, RA's, and student groups
to present workshops on a variety of topics at any time during
the year. If after reading what follows and our ideas for workshops,
you would like to discuss sponsoring a program or a series of
programs, please call the Center at 443-3616 or email
Daniel Klamm , our Outreach/Marketing Coordinator.

Suggestions for Workshops
INTRODUCTION TO CAREER SERVICES
This program describes all the services, resources and programs
of the Center and links them to students' career decision-making,
job search and grad school planning activities. Specific emphases
are placed on:
+ utilizing OrangeLink, our online management system
+ advising, critiquing and coaching services
+ informational resources
+ on-campus recruiting
+ alternatives to campus recruiting
+ credentials service
JOB SEARCH SKILLS
Resume Writing
+ Provides guidance on resume purposes, formats (including "electronic"
resumes), wording, length categories of information and typical
mistakes.
+ Recommended for any student needing a resume for any employment
pursuit.
+ Especially valuable before requesting an individual critique.
Cover Letter Writing
+ Features discussions, models and examples of ad responses, exploratory,
and referral letters.
+ Tips on writing style, flow of information, use of related research,
length and related issues.
+ A must for anyone who will mail, fax or electronically submit
a resume.
+ Recommended highly in advance of a critique.
Interviewing
+ A comprehensive primer on successful interviewing, focusing
on preparation, attitude, predictable stages and questions, and
follow up.
+ Emphasizes developing and using key information on jobs and
employers, handling certain employers styles, and generally presenting
an informed, focused, confident image to any employer.
+ A crucial program to attend before taking on or off-campus interviews
or practice interviews conducted by consultants.
Researching Employers and Careers
+ An introduction to the value, techniques and resources for conducting
employment-related research before and during any search.
+ Emphasizes what should be sought and why--creative sources of
information.
+ Addresses where in a contact campaign or interviewing process
such research can have a favorable impact on an employer.
Succeeding at a Career Fair
+ An overview of elements that contribute to success at a fair
+ Covers pre-fair preparation, notably employer research and personalized "commercials"
+ Addresses what to wear, what to bring, questions to expect, questions to ask, and how to follow up
JOB SEARCH STRATEGIES
Succeeding in the Internet / Advertised Job Market
+ Where to find ads and announcements
+ How much expectation to invest in the advertised market
+ Techniques that may improve the effectiveness of a search and
subsequent responses
The "Hidden Job Market"
+ Formulation of targets/timetables of a self-marketing effort.
+ Research, communication and follow up skills for success
+ Crucial for students who have a limited time to devote to job
hunting during the academic year and those whose talents have
not historically been sought by on-campus recruiters.
Networking
+ The who, when, how, where and why of networking.
+ Especially recommended for students who feel they "have
no contacts."
GETTING STARTED WITH CAREER PLANNING
+ Focuses on the assessment of skills, interests, career satisfaction,
expectations, and personality that serve as foundations for evaluating
career options.
+ Intended to be very interactive, the program can include written
excercises completed in advance that can be discussed in the workshop.
+ Resources for further exploration are presented as well.
PREPARING FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL
+ Focuses on the advisability, timing, financing and application
process of further study.
+ Print, online and other SU resources for researching programs
and financing are introduced.
SUCCEEDING IN THE WORKPLACE OF THE 21st CENTURY
+ Examines trends and employer practices that have already begun
to impact careers and workplaces of the near future.
+ Suggests strategies that new professionals may use to start
out and prosper.
+ Tips on managing career, personal life, finances, and more are
offered and discussed.
+ This program is usually tailored to the interests of the audience
in advance.
