Applying for an Internship
Applying for an internship is like applying for a job. You will need an up-to date resume, and in some cases, a cover letter; CCS can help you prepare resumes and letters. Some sites have their own application forms and procedures that you must follow. Opportunities you find on OrangeLink will have their own application instructions.
Generally, the following guidelines apply:
For elective non-credit internships:
Apply in the manner requested by the employer. These internships are private arrangements between you and the employer; you are not required to notify the University of these or to complete any university forms. Seek guidance, however, from CCS in order to work out expectations and details with the employer so as to avoid an unsatisfactory experience.
For elective academic credit internships:
Application processes vary slightly according to the type of internship for which you are applying. (See types of internships) All elective academic credit internships need the support of a professor who acts as faculty sponsor, so you need to approach a professor who has knowledge of the content area of the internship. Additional instructions and supporting forms can be found on OrangeLink, and questions can always be directed to CCS by phone at 443-3616, in person, or by email.
For independent internships:
Independent internships are opportunities students develop by approaching an employer who may not have advertised an opportunity. Students ask if an internship is available or might be created, and follow through based on the employer's instructions. If credit is then sought, once the employer offers an internship, students should complete the online proposal and other forms required by an elective academic credit internship. A proposal must be supported by a professor who is prepared to act as a faculty sponsor.
