DIVERSITY RESOURCES FOR LGBT ALUMNI

Internships | Permanent Recruitment, Networking and Workplace Support

The goal of this collection of resources is to provide LGBT alumni with information and guidance that speaks to the unique needs and issues that come with being an LGBT graduate in a search for temporary as well as permanent career opportunities. Alumni should examine the other diversity sections if they share one or more characteristics with the other targeted populations.

Alumni should utilize these resources in conjunction with those outlined in the alumni index that deal with internships, permanent positions, job search skills development, and the information resources that impact all these areas.

Counselors at the Center for Career Services are available for in-person and telephone discussions on how these resources can be used effectively. Phone appointments may be arranged at 315 443-3616.

Suggestions for additional resources should be emailed to Chuck Reutlinger.

Internships

The following represent opportunities for students to gain experience while addressing various issues of the LGBT community on either a national or local level. Further research would certainly yield other similar opportunities. Alumni would need to meet eligibility requirements to participate.

Human Rights Campaign
HRC works to educate the public on a wide array of topics affecting GLBT Americans, including workplace, family, discrimination and health issues. The HRC Foundation, an HRC-affiliated organization, engages in extensive research and provides education and programming.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
Interns will gain experience working in a national organization dedicated to ending discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. A high degree of exposure to national issues and events will be gained in a fast paced setting. Interns may participate in department staff meetings where strategy is determined and plans are made. Interns are given a high amount of responsibility and work side-by-side with staff members working on important issues and projects.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
The Task Force has graduate and undergraduate internships available each school session for college and university students or recent graduates covering a variety of disciplines. Internships are generally located in the Washington, DC office, however a limited number of positions may be available at staff locations in Cambridge, MA, New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA depending on availability and applicant qualifications.

Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)
GLSEN interns will have the opportunity to communicate with new and existing GLSEN chapters, develop local and state campaigns on GLSEN issues and provide technical assistance and organizing resources to chapters. Depending on interns' interests and the organization's needs at the time, particular tasks may include leadership development, media work, fundraising, and special events, such as the Day of Silence.

Victory Fund and Leadership Institute
This internship program gives the opportunity to gain experience in LGBT political activism, consider career options, strengthen job-related skills and network with leaders in local, state and national politics.
