Negotiating Salaries and Other Compensation

Students and alumni/ae alike frequently raise questions about whether they will be expected or allowed to negotiate elements of their compensation package. The Center can help with the following:

Self Help Resources:

If near enough to Syracuse, alumni may visit our Career Resource area which has print resources that speak to salaries, the negotiation process and evaluating offers. Our principal publication, The Career Guide, has a section related to interviewing within which is an introduction to negotiating. The resources and links below also address these topics and should be reviewed before seeking staff assistance.

Staff Assistance/Workshops:

Career consultants are available to discuss the advisability, timing and conduct of negotiations. In-person or telephone appointments can be arranged by calling 315 443-3616.

Alumni who can visit our office may choose to start such discussions during drop-in hours, 10-15 minute meetings with a consultant available available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 12 - 2:30 PM, and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:30. No appointments are needed, but the time limit may be strictly enforced due to demand.

The Center also schedules workshops on negotiating during the year, and publicizes them in the Calendar of Events on this site and in the calendar maintained as part of OrangeLink, formerly eRecruiting.
