Networking/Building Contacts

Surveys reveal that Syracuse students secure post-grauate positions more often through networking and contacts than any other single method of job seeking. We also know from experience that communicating with knowledgeable people at the research and career exploration stage of their career development process greatly benefits students.

The Center for Career Services provides the following to assist students to identify contacts and to become comfortable with the process of networking:

Information Resources

+ Access to nearly 1500 SU alumni through the Mentor@SU database maintained on OrangeLink
+ An online collection of articles, advice, and tips on networking, informational interviewing and related topics
+ A print collection of topics relative to job seeking, our Career Guide, which includes discussions of networking
+ Online access to sites that identify and profile professional associations in many professional fields
+ Online access to CareerSearch, a database of 2.8 million organizations which includes professional and related associations as well as contact names of executives in key roles
+ Books on the value and techniques of networking

Programming

+ Annual workshop series on networking, frequently delivered by employer representatives, alumni and other experts on the SU campus
+ Annual Diversity Business Summit focused on the transition concerns of persons from a variety of traditionally underrepresented populations and the crucial role of networking for these groups
+ Programs targeted specifically at international students whose grasp of the American job seeking methods is frequently marginal
+ Programs and panels offered at University facilities in NYC, LA and Washington, DC and through alumni clubs in other areas

Individual Advising

+ Daily drop-ins, i.e. 10-15 minute, unscheduled interactions, for answering quick questions
+ Longer appointments for lengthier discussions of, and coaching on issues related to networking
+ Referrals and links to other SU college and university resources and programs

More information on these topics and details of related programming can be explored with Chuck Reutlinger, Associate Director for Information Resources and Services, by calling him at 315 443-3616 or by emailing Chuck .
