Job Search Skills Development

Many students discover that pursuing internships, campus jobs, leadership positions and post-graduate opportunities requires them to conduct research, write and speak effectively, ask others for information and assistance, and to think critically about their options. In the context of exploring and pursuing careers, these may be skills that are absent or underdeveloped at this stage of their lives. The earlier students develop these skills, the more they may succeed in securing pre-graduation opportunities.

Recognizing that we must be teachers and coaches as well as counselors, the Center for Career Services provides the following to assist students to develop solid job seeking and job winning skills:

Information Resources

+ An online collection of advice, tips and resume and letter examples
+ The Career Guide, our annual print publication with advice and examples
+ Books on resumes, letters, interviewing and overall job search strategies

Programming

+ Workshops on search skills presented for student groups, faculty, and residence halls
+ Sessions with employers who provide guidance on search skills
+ Programs targeted specifically at international students whose grasp of the American process of job finding is frequently marginal

Individual Advising

+ Daily drop-ins, i.e. 10-15 minute, unscheduled interactions, for critiquing resumes and letters, and answering quick questions
+ Longer appointments for lengthier discussions of, and coaching on, search skills and current situations
+ Mock interviews which allow for the simulation of an interview, with or without videotaping
+ Access to SU alumni through Mentor@SU which adds to the advice given by staff members
