On-Campus Career Fairs | Off-campus
and Virtual Fairs | Preparing for a Fair
Fall Semester.
A Fall Career Fair is held in either
September or early October to start the recuiting year. Employers
from all types of industries, businesses and government agencies
have an opportunity to meet students and faculty in an informal
setting to discuss hiring and internship projections and emerging needs and to
collect resumes. A number of receptions and presentations, including
the Diversity Business Summit, are typically scheduled around this
event.
A local internship fair is also scheduled in September of each Fall to give all levels of students a fuller sense of opportunities to gain expereince in the Syracuse area.
The Whitman School stages a number of field-specific career fairs (accounting, marketing, etc.) during the Fall semester which are open to any SU student. Click the link form our home page for more info.
Spring Semester.
The Spring Internship and Career
Fair and related activities kick off the spring
recruiting season. All feature a broad mix of employers and significant
opportunities for networking as well as discovering internship and permanent positions.
The College of Engineering and Computer Science hosts a career fair in February as part of their Engineering Week celebration. The Environmental Career Fair, featuring
environment-oriented organizations, occurs later in February on the ESF campus and welcomes SU students. Community Connections, an event focused on government and non-profit
options, usually occurs in March before Spring Break.
April brings the CNY Communications Consortium, a Newhouse-coordinated chance for any student interested in communications internships or permanent positions to interview on campus for specific positions. This event requires students to review position offerings and to submit letters and resumes by a deadline typically set before the end of February.
Other special career information fairs are held
throughout the year. As new events are planned, details will be
available at the Center, on this site's Calendar of Events, and
on OrangeLink
Off-Campus and Virtual Fairs
Big East Career Fair. SU collaborates with other
members of the Big East to stage a career fair in New York in
the same March week as the Men's Basketball Championship. Details
can be found on our Calendar of Events.
Big East Virtual Career Fair.
In recent Springs, an online career fair has been offered to Big
East member colleges. Positons are advertised for a specific length
of time and students log on to a special web site to view and
apply for the positions. Watch our Calendar of Events and OrangeLink
for details.
International Student e-Fair. Begun in 2008, this online fair affords international students a chance to review and pursue opportunities around the world.
Preparing for Career Fairs
Students should prepare to succeed at career fairs. They can watch a video on preparing for a fair which was produced as part of a career development series for the iSchool in the Spring of 2008.
Career Fairs and an Overall Job Search Strategy
Additional career, intern and job fairs,
targeted at both broad audiences and special student groups, are
held throughout the year across the country and are sponsored
either by colleges, nonprofit organizations, or private companies.
Not all are intended for current students or recent grads, but
the thorough job seeker should stay abreast of such fairs. Watch
our Calendar of Events for links and metropolitan newspapers for
publicity.
NOTE: Career and job fairs provide great chances
to connect with great opportunities. Competition for employer
attention, however, can be very stiff. Graduating students should
develop other concurrent job search strategies to win their desired
positions and should take advantage of all advising, seminars,
and resources available to develop other search tactics.
