IND 272 (3) Principles of Industrial Design II

Course Description: Basic design problems incorporating mechanical and electrical power systems, production constraints, and simple hand-to-product human-factor considerations. Spring ‘96 - designed a homeless shelter for the Rescue Mission.


Interior Design

ISD 353 (3) Architectural Structures for Designers

Instructor: Peter Crissey

Course Description: Basic structural theory, building processes, systems, materials, and code requirements for the design of new construction and remodeling. Vocabulary of architectural communication. Spring ‘99 class did a project for the Syracuse Lakefront Development Corporation – studies for a Harborfest Hotel in Onondaga Lake.

ISD 453/653 (3) Interior Design: System

Instructor: Mary Ellen Letterman

Course Description: Research for the interior environment: lighting, computers, technology, furniture, materials, special populations, ergonomics, environmental and future needs. Theoretical and experimental design projects. Students work with real clients to analyze a written program and design a solution. Teams of students came up with exterior design ideas for the St. Camillus Rehabilitation Center during the Fall of 1998.


ISD 454/654 (3) Interior Design: Documentation

Instructor: Mary Ellen Letterman

Course Description: Contract Documentation and administration for contract commercial interior design projects. Students work with real clients to analyze a written program and design a solution. Students completed a comprehensive design package for the Jowonio School, Syracuse NY, in the Spring of 1999.


Museum Studies

Course Description: Eight weeks or more of full-time work in an approved museum or gallery under close supervision of senior staff. Prereq: permission of department chair.


Speech Communication

SPC 314 (3) Oral Interpretation of Literature

Instructor: Staff

Course Description: Seeks to develop mastery of body and voice by applying speech communication theories to the oral interpretation of messages. Students go on site to elementary schools and read to children, then discuss books they have read.


SPC 430/630 (3) Intercultural Communication

Instructor: Richard Buttny

Course Description: Principles and Applications. Approaches and issues pertinent to effective communication across cultures and in multicultural societies. Verbal and nonverbal patterns. Culture shock.
