Introduction
Part 1: General Information about Syracuse
| Location | Geography & Climate |
The City of Syracuse, established in 1848, is Onondaga’s major metropolitan center. It is a medium-sized city covering about 28 square miles (72492 km2) with a population of approximately 170,000.Syracuse is located in the geographic center of New YorkState, where the State's two major interstate routes, the east-west New York State Thruway (I-90) and north-south I-81, intersect. New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Harford, as well as Montreal and Toronto in Canada are all 200 to 300 miles away (a driving distance of about 4~5 hours). The area is located in the Finger Lakes region, with hundreds of lakes, waterfalls, wineries, and places for recreation). |
City altitude ranges from 364 to 681 feet, while approximately five miles south of Syracuse, the hills mount to about 1,500 feet. Immediately to the west, the terrain is rolling and elevated 500 to 800 feet above the mean sea level. The Syracuse area enjoys a four-season continental climate with marked seasonal changes. In short, it has warm summers and cold winters. During summer and part of spring and autumn, temperatures customarily rise rapidly during daytime to fall rapidly after sunset, so the nights are relatively cool and comfortable. Summer temperature can climb to as high as 90oF (32.2oC) and in the winter plunge to as low as -10oF (-12.2oC). Excessively warm spells are rare. Temperatures average 24oF in January; 46oF in April; 71oF in July and 62oF in September. |
(Philadelphia)

Part 2: General Information About SyracuseUniversity
SyracuseUniversity is recognized nationally and internationally as a major research and graduate center. It is a private institution with an enrollment of 11,577 full-time undergraduate and 3,229 full-time graduate students representing the 50 states, more than 82 foreign countries, and varied economic and social backgrounds. Undergraduate programs are offered in more than 200 subject areas.
Founded in 1870, SyracuseUniversity has become a nonsectarian, academic community of 13 colleges and schools occupying a 200-acre main campus during the more than 130 years that have passed. On November 18, 1992, Syracuse University Senate adopted the “Student-Centered Research University SU Compact? The statement of the compact commits the various campus constituencies to working together to promote learning and a positive campus culture.SU’s vision is "to be the leading student-centered research university with faculty, students and staff sharing responsibility and working together for academic, professional and personal growth." The institution has five core values: Quality, Innovation, Caring, Diversity and Service.
Syracuse University and the neighboring SUNY- College of Environmental Science and Forestry enjoy a unique relationship, allowing the institutions to provide outstanding cooperative education programs.
Part 3: StateUniversity of New York-College of Environmental Science and Forestry
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse is both old and new, small and large. ESF was established in 1911 as a school of forestry and rechartered in 1972 to reflect the College's broader mission in the environmental sciences. It boasts a small-college atmosphere with only 1,800 students, yet is affiliated with neighboring SyracuseUniversity, which provides ESF students with the additional academic, cultural and social benefits of a large campus. Costs are low, standards high.
The SUNY-ESF and SyracuseUniversity reside on the same campus together. Students from both campuses share most of the facilities. Students at SUNY-ESF may take courses from SyracuseUniversity at no additional cost. This allows each institution to contribute to the programs of the other. As a result, students at ESF not only benefit from the broad range of environmental science programs on their own campus, but also from the collaborating programs at SyracuseUniversity.
