Progress of the Chinese Library Project

Message from William A. Garrison, Deputy University Librarian and Associate Dean of Libraries

DRAFT 4/9/07

To: Ronghong Lin, President
Chinese Students and Scholars Association
From: William A. Garrison

Re: Chinese Library Proposal

The Syracuse University Library would very much like to support the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) in making Chinese language materials more readily available. After giving your proposal careful consideration, I would like to offer the following response.

The Library will work with you to conduct a pilot project to add Chinese language materials to our collection. The pilot will be conducted during the 2007-2008 academic year, with planning and preparation occurring during summer 2007.

As part of this pilot the Library will

  • Appoint a Library staff member as project liaison
  • Accept books (no videos or other non-print items) donated through CSSA
  • Create a section of shelving that will be designated for these materials in location of our choosing
  • Catalog these materials with brief records and process these materials according to Library standards
  • Maintain the shelves
  • Manage borrowing and return processes for these materials
  • Enable [designated] Library computers to search Chinese language
  • Create within its web site appropriate links to the CSSA web page
  • Create appropriate signage and instructional materials to help users locate these materials
  • Facilitate the creation of a streamlined search function for the CSSA web page (e.g. Stabler running collection search function)
  • Allow community members to borrow these materials according to current Library practices (i.e. guest borrower status—fee are $100 for one year, $50 for a semester, or $25 for one month. See http://library.syr.edu/information/circulation/circpol.htm#guest_borrower for details)
  • Work with CSSA to evaluate the pilot during the spring 2008 semester and determine whether, and if so how, to continue this service in the future

The CSSA will contribute to the pilot in the following manner.

  • Appoint a project liaison to be the primary contact person with the Library for this project
  • Donate Chinese language books
  • Deliver books to Library
  • Create and maintain a webpage providing information about this collection
  • Recruit volunteers to assist with the collection as needed, upon request from the Library

Welcome CSSA's New President!

Congratulations to Mr. Ronghong Lin, who has just been elected to be CSSA's next president for year 2006-2007. Let's give him our warmest welcome!

Ronghong Lin is a second year graduate student in Chemical Engineering Department. Many people have already known him as CSSA's treasurer in year 2005-2006. We believe that Ronghong Lin and his committee would be a strong and effective team to serve our members and the community.

We the current CSSA committee members also want to take this opportunity to thank all the CSSA members and our friends, advisors who have always been supportive. And we hope that you can continue to support Ronghong Lin and his committee. Together we can build a better future.
