Alcohol Poisoning

It may not be safe for your friend to "sleep it off." Symptoms of alcohol poisoning include:

  • Unconsciousness or semi-consciousness. Cannot be awakened
  • Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin
  • Slowed breathing (less than eight times per minute) or irregular breathing
  • Vomiting while sleeping or passed out, and not waking up after vomiting

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. It is possible your friend has consumed enough alcohol to slow or stop involuntary functions (breathing and heart rate) necessary for life.

If a person has any of these symptoms, he or she may be suffering from acute alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning.

  • Get help. Call someone, a staff member, public safety, SUA
    • On campus: dial 711 from any campus or pay telephone
    • Off campus: dial 443-4299 or Onondaga County 911
    • On a cell phone; dial #SU (#78) in the campus area
  • Do not leave the person alone.
  • Turn him/her on a side to prevent choking in the case of vomiting.
  • Always be "better safe than sorry."

The Office of Prevention Services provides students free confidential counseling for issues of substance abuse. If you are concerned about your use of alcohol or other drugs, or that of a friend, call 315-443-4234 to schedule an appointment.
