News from the Cleveland Kendo Tournament 4/4-4/6/08:

Joe Pineda went to round 3 of mudansha in his first tournament in the US - it was awesomely surprising how well he fared after only a year of training (though it was in Japan, like a madman).

Julian Montelongo won a match in teams, which was great because this was his first tournament and only week 3 in bogu. But you may have heard his incredibly powerful kiai from the other side of the gym, and if you saw him you no doubt noticed his unlimited energy in his matches.

Pineda-san passed nikyu, Samuel Rivier passed shodan.

We want to extend our unlimited thanks to CKA, especially our old compatriots Joe Chen and Andrew Lau who gave us lodging for the weekend; to Robin and Sugawara sensei of Central Indiana for giving us their support in the team competition, fighting under the Syracuse moniker with pride; and to the man and his daughter whose names escape me at the moment, but who generously and effectively fixed our broken Boston bogu bag.

Furthermore, from a Case Kendo alum, I'd just like to recognize everyone at CKA - It was amazing to see you all again. Best wishes to Chris-san and to the kids from Detroit (great job - your do are far superior to mine).
