9:00am - 4:30pm

IMPORTANT NOTICE--CONFERENCE LOCATION CHANGE

Due to the amount of interest in the Teaching Respect For All Conference, we have moved this conference from May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society to a larger venue on the Syracuse University campus.

The registration and morning session will be held in Gifford Auditorium in H.B. Crouse Building (or simply known as HBC) on the main quad on North Campus. Two of the afternoon breakout sessions will be in the Hall of Languages (right next door) and one will remain in Gifford Auditorium.

Free parking will be available in the Irving Garage. Directions and maps are available on the SU Parking Services Website. Click on Directions and Maps. Scroll down to directions by lot. Click on Irving Garage for directions depending on where you are coming from.

From the Irving Garage, walk toward the left side of the Carrier Dome and make your way to the quad on Main Campus. H.B. Crouse will be a short brick building on the left side of quad when standing in front of Hendricks Chapel. We will have signs directing you from Irving Garage to H.B. Crouse. You can view a campus map of North Campus from the parking services website.

Individuals with disabilities who require parking closer to the venue should contact lgbt@syr.edu asap so arrangements can be made.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Safe Space?

Many teachers, administrators, and students are not equipped to deal with homophobia, bullying, harassment, and name-calling. Misunderstandings, fear, and personal beliefs prevent many people from addressing anti-gay bias and homophobia in their schools.

This free day-long series of educational workshops will provide teachers, students, administrators, and pre-service educators with the knowledge and tools to successfully create a culture where all people are respected, free to express themselves, and able to reach their full potential.

Registration is required and the deadline is February 15. Space is limited to the first 150 registrants.

Register online starting January 16:

What Students Say

The need for such a program in the Central New York Community is clear given the extraordinary challenges LGBTQ youth face on a daily basis. A recent study conducted by GLSEN found that:

of students in public high schools report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers.

of students report hearing homophobic comments made by school staff.

of LGBTQ youth report that they have NEVER heard a teacher challenge or interrupt negative comments made towards them.

Schools have a responsibility to keep all students safe and to create environments in which LGBTQ students can be who they are and in which all students can learn to understand and accept differences in gender identity/expression and sexuality orientation.

Teachers play a critical role in addressing harassment and bias, educating students about differences, and supporting LGBTQ youth.
