ABOUT SURFC

HISTORY

The Syracuse University Rugby Football Club was founded in 1969 as an Anglo-American collaboration between two graduate students; Peter Baigent from Halifax, England and John Mauro, Syracuse New York (via Notre Dame Rugby Club). The first reported result was an encouraging 6-0 loss to Rochester. The actual result was 76-0 but, with a fine disregard for journalistic details one digit was accidentally omitted in the Daily Orange report. The club has enjoyed much success since that humble beginning, against top clubs and colleges in eastern U.S.A. and has organized tours to Florida, Bahamas and England.

SURFC TODAY

The club is a registered member of the New York State Rugby Conference and United States Rugby Football Union (USARFU). The club boasts two USARFU certified coaches that have kept the team as an ‘ever-present’ in the Premier Division (top 7 of 68 approximate teams). This year Syracuse B side has been entered into Excelsior East Division III for competative play. The team had registered seven straight conference play-off appearances. From the conference play-offs the team has gone on to the North East Championship competition to play teams such as Northeastern, Dartmouth and most recently Boston College.
The Fall league season provides 6-10 games, depending on playoffs. The spring tournament season provides 8-10 games over four or five weekends. A flexible, yet serious five day practice schedule operates at fields on campus and at the Hookway recreation complex. There are winter training opportunities in the gym, weight room, Manley Field House and the Carrier Dome
