PROGRAM OFFERINGS The Syracuse University R.A.P.E. Center is dedicated to educating the Syracuse University community about rape and other forms of nonconsensual sexual activity. R.A.P.E. Center professional staff and trained peer educators are available to facilitate interactive discussions with students, faculty and staff about issues of healthy sexuality, healthy relationships, alcohol and consent, and the role each person can play in preventing sexual violence. Effective violence prevention programs incorporate an “empowered bystander” approach to gender violence and bullying. Rather than focusing on young men as perpetrators or potential perpetrators, or young women as victims or potential targets of abuse, the focus is on men, women and transgender individuals as empowered bystanders who intervene in the face of abusive or harassing behavior, as well as provide support and assistance to their peers. R.A.P.E. CENTER PROGRAMS: “Working Together To End Sexual Violence” – a workshop created to explore what it means to be an empowered bystander. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the concept of empowered bystander to their everyday lives. “Imagine a World without Sexual Violence” - a presentation by e5m, a student volunteer interactive peer theater troupe. Through social action theater, the audience engages in dialogue about the complexities of sexual violence with an emphasis on prevention. “Healthy Relationships 101” – an interactive discussion about what constitutes types of abuse vs. types of respect within relationships of all kinds. This workshop leads into a discussion about being empowered bystanders. “Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program” – This is an in-depth training for students, faculty and/or staff to raise awareness of many forms of violence, expose participants to the concept of being empowered bystanders, and guide them in a process of developing strategies for intervening safely, before violence occurs, thereby de-escalating risky situations. This training usually requires a commitment of a minimum of 7 hours. “Sex Jeopardy” - led by peer educators who are members of Sex-Esteem, this fun-filled workshop gives students an opportunity to learn about resources on campus as well as information about sexually transmissible infections and HIV, pregnancy prevention, responsible decision making and tips for a safe experience as a student at S.U./SUNY ESF. “Assisting Survivors of Sexual Assault” - Syracuse University faculty and staff members have significant contact with students and are often in a position to have a key role in identifying and responding to students experiencing difficulties. This workshop will help faculty and staff prepare for the possibility of a student disclosure.
