Early Registration for Fall 2006
The early registration for Fall 2006 ends on May 10, 2006. Please make your best effort to complete your registration for fall by the 10th. To maintain your F-1 or J-1 student status, you are required to be a full-time student. Click here to read more about maintaining your full-time status.

Please note that if you do not have a graduate assistantship (TA, GA, or RA) and need to register for less than 9 credits as a graduate student at SU this fall, you must file a Certification of Full-Time Status. Only if you cannot file the Certification and this fall is going to be your last semester of study to complete your degree at SU, please file a Last Semester Memo.

Please keep in mind that the late registration period for Fall 2006 is Monday, August 28 - Tuesday, September 5, 2006. If you are an F-1 student, you must complete your academic registration by September 5, 2006 to avoid difficulties in your SEVIS registration, which will be processed automatically upon confirmation of your full-time academic registration in September 2006.

Your Security Deposit
When you moved into your apartment, your landlord probably required you to pay a security deposit. Your landlord must return your security deposit to you, less any lawful deduction, at the end of the lease or within a reasonable time after the end of your lease. A landlord can use your security deposit for the following reasons:
  1. As reimbursement for the reasonable cost of repairs, beyond normal wear and tear, if the tenant damages the apartment
  2. As reimbursement for any unpaid rent.
In the City of Syracuse, local law requires a landlord to refund a security deposit within twenty-one days of the end of the lease or to provide an itemized list of damages or back rent owed for which the security deposit is being withheld. Landlords of buildings with six or more apartments must put your security deposit in an interest-bearing bank account. Tenants must be given the option of having this interest paid to them annually, applied to rent, or paid at the end of the lease term.

Keep as much proof as possible that you have kept your apartment well maintained and that you cleaned it before you moved out. This includes photographs or video of your apartment before and after you lived there, receipts of cleaning supplies you used prior to moving out, a checklist or inspection of damages present in the apartment before and after you lived there (preferably made in writing and with your landlord present). Designate one roommate to save all of this proof until everyone's security deposit has been returned.

If a problem arises with the return of your security deposit, you should first try to resolve it with your landlord before taking other action. If the dispute cannot be resolved, you may contact Student Legal Services at 443-4532. You may also file a complaint with the New York State Attorney General's Office.

Complaint forms can be found online (under "Consumer Issues"). You can also call the Attorney General's Consumer Hotline for more information at 1-800-771-7755. Reminder Before you move, be sure to complete a Change of Address form with the United States Post Office. For more information contact the US Post Office.

Congratulations on a Successful Year, Celebrate Responsibly
As the end of this academic year approaches, you are probably preparing for final exams. As exams come to an end, there will be much to celebrate. Some of you are graduating and others are putting finishing touches to another successful year.

Neighbors tell us that this year the neighborhood was quieter than ever. They appreciate that students have acted responsibly and respected the rights of others. It is our hope that you continue to act responsibly in the days ahead. The University is committed to working with students and the community to ensure that the close to this academic year is both safe and enjoyable.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support. Best of luck on your final exams and have an eventful and productive summer.

Don't Know What To Do With Your Trash and Unwanted Items?
Before you move out of your apartment, be sure to ask your landlord where you should place any trash or other unwanted items you may have. The City is working to expedite trash collection in the area to maintain the cleanliness of the neighborhood while students move out of their apartments for the summer.

Remember to place trash in cans provided to you by your landlord. If your landlord has not provided cans, please use 30-gallon trash cans or clear trash bags. Trash cans should not be put out prior to 8:00 p.m. the night before collection and should be removed by 7:00 p.m. on collection day. Place recyclable materials in the blue collection bin provided to you. Break down any cardboard boxes and separate newspapers from plastics and aluminum. If you have any questions regarding trash collection or removal call (315) 448-CITY.

Due to the success of last year's donation drive, this year's drive has been expanded and simplified. The campus-wide donation drive, Ten Tons of Love will be held Thursday, May 4th to Friday, May 19th. Students that wish to participate can donate the following used items in good condition:
  • Clothing
  • Kitchen supplies (silverware, dishes, small appliances)
  • Linens (towels, sheets, pillows, blankets)
  • Furniture
Donations can be dropped off at the Office of Off-Campus Student Services at 754 Ostrom Ave, or students can call 443-5489 or email ocsserv@syr.edu to schedule a pick up. Good used items will be given to Catholic Charities, the Interreligious Council Refugee Resettlement Project and St. Vincent DePaul.
