"So, as we explore the soul of Syracuse, let's work together, and be inventive and maintain willpower." -Chancellor Nancy Cantor, Inauguration speech, November 5th, 2004

Founded at Texas A&M under Vice President Joe Nausbaum, The Big Event began as a student-run community service effort to give back to the surrounding community at Bryan College Station. Nausbaum and the Texas A&M Student Government cabinet endeavored to make this community service initiative a means of saying thank you to a community that continually supported their university. Since then The Big Event has made enormous strides nation-wide, engaging students to reach out to their communities in a most profound way, i.e., through community service. The Big Event is now an annual event that is celebrated at more than 50 major universities across the nation and still growing. On its 22nd birthday, The Big Event has become a contagious fad in which universities across the nation take much pride in undertaking.
Syracuse University has joined the ranks of neighboring universities, under the sponsorship of The Orangeseeds and The Student Association, to make The Big Event an SU tradition of hard working, dedicated volunteers committed to the welfare of the Syracuse area. The Big event will forge new relationships and acquaint Syracuse University with numerous admirable and essential community organizations. This initiative will also develop a strong sense of community as well as support the charge presented by our new Chancellor and President, Dr. Nancy Cantor to “Explore the Soul of Syracuse.” The Big Event will be an historic unique effort that will establish Syracuse University as the centerpiece of progress in the Syracuse area through the amazing gift of giving back.
